Global energy demand has experienced a significant increase in the last few decades, having a direct impact on the oil and gas (oil and gas) sector. The transition to renewable energy, on the one hand, and increasing energy needs in developing countries, on the other, create complex dynamics for the oil and gas industry. Economic growth in countries such as India, China, and Indonesia is driving energy consumption, with oil as one of the main sources. According to an International Energy Agency (IEA) report, global oil demand is expected to reach 104 million barrels per day in 2023, most of it coming from the transportation and industrial sectors. This increase reflects a deepening dependence on oil despite efforts to diversify energy sources. The impact of this demand is not only visible from the volatile oil commodity price landscape, but also from ongoing investment in oil and gas exploration and production. Many oil and gas companies, including giants like ExxonMobil and Chevron, are investing in new technologies to increase production efficiency while reducing their carbon footprint. However, environmental challenges and increasingly stringent regulations require adaptation from these companies. The global energy transition that is occurring is encouraging many countries to abandon dependence on fossil fuels. OPEC member countries, for example, are facing pressure to transform, introducing economic diversification policies. Oil-producing countries, such as Saudi Arabia, are developing initiatives such as Vision 2030 to reduce dependence on oil, investing in renewable energy and green technologies. In the context of climate change, growing energy demand exacerbates greenhouse gas emissions. The oil and gas sector contributes significantly to global emissions, with fossil fuel extraction and burning activities being the main driver. Responding to this challenge, many countries are pursuing net-zero emissions targets, which urges the oil and gas industry to innovate through the development of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology and the use of biofuels. Another adaptation strategy in the oil and gas sector is energy portfolio diversification. Oil companies are starting to shift most of their investments to renewable energy, including solar and wind. For example, BP and Shell have announced a shift in strategy to pursue better growth potential through investment in clean energy projects. Energy price fluctuations also influence global geopolitics. Countries that own oil and gas reserves are trying to secure their position on the international stage. Tensions in the Middle East, for example, are often colored by a deep oil history. The continued global demand for oil and gas has forced many countries to strengthen diplomatic and economic cooperation for the sake of energy supply stability. However, other challenges come from technological developments such as electrification and automation which change the way we use energy. Electric vehicles are increasingly popular, and this is predicted to affect long-term demand for oil. These global industry adjustments are necessary to remain relevant in a rapidly changing market. With all these dynamics, the oil and gas sector is now faced with the need to adapt, innovate and be responsible for environmental challenges. Facing ever-increasing global energy demand, the oil and gas sector must commit to sustainability while ensuring sufficient energy supply for a growing population. This adaptation is not only critical for the finances of large companies but also for sustainable global energy availability.
